Etsy’s Christmas commercial stars popular character Wally
Etsy’s Christmas commercial features the famous character created by Martin Handford.
In Christmas adverts it is common to see mythological characters from classic Christmas stories. This year we have the example of the Sainsbury’s Christmas advert, starring Roald Dahl’s “The BFG”.
But if there is one character that we did not expect to find in a Christmas campaign, it is Wally. The popular character from the famous comic series “Where’s Wally?” created in 1987 by Martin Handford is the protagonist of the Christmas advert from Etsy, the American company dedicated to e-commerce.
“Waldo Anthem” is the title of the Etsy Christmas commercial created by the agency Orchard Creative. The campaign features the popular character in his usual red and white striped outfit and matching hat.
The campaign aims to answer a question that not everyone asks themselves: “Who is Wally really?” Apart from being lost all over the world, what does he do? And it is precisely this desire to be discovered that makes him come home for Christmas.
When that happens, everyone recognizes him and stops him to take photos. After traveling around the world, Wally feels like he has come home. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, he arrives at a coffee shop where he has met someone very special who gives him a very personal gift.
According to Heather Larimer, creative director at Orchard Creative Group: “We at the agency wanted to put an interesting spin on the character – to transform someone who everyone thinks they know into someone who is a true friend, who understands and values them. While the world is asking ‘Where’s Wally?’, we want to know ‘Who is Wally?’ because sometimes he feels like no one really knows him.”
