McDonald’s reimagines the Christmas campaign to connect with new generations

The Christmas ads have already been released, with only a few companies still behind schedule. One of the latest is McDonald’s which, despite being one of the most anticipated Christmas commercials, made us wait.

This time, the McDonald’s Christmas advert released in the Netherlands challenges the traditional idea that December is a perfect and magical month. It does so by embracing chaos and turning it into the fun star of the spot.

McDonald’s – The Most Terrible Time of the Year

The McDonald’s Christmas advert is titled “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and was created by the agency TBWANEBOKO. The piece rewrites the classic “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” to turn it into “the most terrible time of the year.” An ironic reinterpretation that serves as the starting point for a humorous look at the tensions and stress of December.

The McDonald’s Christmas ad draws on scenes that are highly recognizable for the Dutch audience and pushes them to the extreme through intensive use of artificial intelligence. To do so, TBWANEBOKO worked with an international team of AI specialists and teamed up with the director duo MAMA (Sweetshop), known for their bold visual style. The result: the first fully AI-generated commercial for McDonald’s Netherlands, a demonstration of how technology can elevate creative storytelling without sacrificing production value.

Karin van Prooijen, marketing manager at McDonald’s Netherlands, commented: “December is a busy time for everyone. We want to give people something to look forward to every day, not just on the key dates.”

Meanwhile, Darre van Dijk, chief creative officer at TBWANEBOKO, said: “From the start we wanted to challenge the conventions of Christmas advertising. It all began with the idea of rewriting one of the most iconic songs of the season.”
